Trailer and Teaser Trailer Comparisons

The teaser trailer of ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ is one that is longer than many others for it runs for one minute and thirty-six seconds, however it still carries the contents of a teaser trailer by telling the audience more about the fact that the film is coming out in the near future, than giving away the plot and content of the film, adding to the excitement of the film’s release. However usually teaser trailers are shorter but recently have been increasingly made longer to get the audience more engaged, therefore resulting in more of a gross at the box office.

This teaser trailer includes a montage of footage cut together fast and steadily having the cuts in time with the beat of the non-diegetic music playing over the action. The non-diegetic music is a famous piece by ‘Led Zeppelin’ with ‘immigrant song’, being beaty and fast paced fitting with the teaser trailer. However compared to other teaser trailers and trailers in general, there is no dialogue included to give away any of the real plot it only shows you the action, and during the action it singles out one images which is repeated throughout the trailer, which is the white house down a dirt road giving this establishment more significance to the rest, giving it more power and making the audience intrigued as to what is inside and the mystery behind it.

The trailer for ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ is slower in editing and motion. Immediately you notice there is dialogue involved, giving us more information about the storyline very early on in the trailer. The non-diegetic music placed over the top as well is a piece which portrays mystery and action. The beat of the music is quite steady throughout and it ends on simple notes at the end to give a powerful finish.

It is related with the genres of action and mystery. It reels in its audience from the action packed footage and brings in an audience which skews towards a male audience; however is still very much a film for the women as well involving a woman as one of the main characters and having a hunky man as eye candy.

It’s unique selling point would also be the main male character being Daniel Craig, and seeing he is well known for his part as the newest ‘James Bond’ he himself will bring in a wide range of an audience from people being of young teenagers upwards to the older generation.

Mind Map of Trailers

Diary

This evening once I had looked at some other trailers I have decided that I wish to focus on aspects used throughout the trailer of Charlie St. Cloud as well as looking at others. So by the end of this year I will have a piece that is moving yet makes you smile at the same time. Overall I will probably focus on Drama genres analysing more trailers of the same genre and looking in to similarities and differences between the different trailers.

Trailer Analysis: Charlie St. Cloud

‘Charlie St. Cloud’ is a film which is placed in the drama genre, for it includes a tragic loss which has a huge impact on the main character making his life constricted and depressing. However, it includes a love interest which helps him break through the traumatic experience and get back to his original life. This film is one that is quite equal when it comes to its gender target audience for it involves sports and a battle for life bringing in a male audience as well as having a love story intertwined with the emotional aspect of the film bringing a female audience. However I do believe that overall the female audience dominates the male.

It is a piece which involves the love between brothers which men can relate to whether they have always wished for that connection and love or they have experienced it themselves. This is a piece which is able to draw in its audience by relating to family issues and blowing them to the limit for loosing someone you love is an experience no one wishes to go through and yet some people upsettingly do.
The editing of the film starts quite fast paced with the sport of sailing and then slows when the accident happens but then speeds up again regaining its light-hearted atmosphere.

The non-diegetic music is once again the soul of this piece giving the emotion and atmosphere to this piece, for it begins with a light-hearted cheery piece of music sounding as though there is accomplishment and a future to this piece. However it drastically changes once they have the car crash for it becomes deep and meaningful having the emotion of loss and guilt as the main character, ‘Charlie’, looks down upon his brothers coffin and grave. It then immerses itself into a piece which sounds angelic as ‘Charlie’ talks to his dead  brother, telling us that he is unable to accept what has happened. It then builds back up to its upbeat music piece giving us the sense that after the tragedy there still may be some good which will present itself by the end. The music then descends back into a piece of music which intensifies the emotion involved, yet it is able to amplify every emotion whether it is happy or sad, plus the fact that it is a well known piece of music by ‘Snow Patrol’ called ‘Light Up’, portraying various emotions.
The use of dialogue throughout the trailer contributes to the emotional rollercoaster that is portrayed in the trailer, it also shows us that ‘Charlie’ has emotional conflict within himself; it’s as though he doesn’t know what he wants. The end line to the trailer I find gives so much emotion just from the way he says “We’ll always be brothers”, this short but effective line makes you think that he is moving on yet holding on to what he had but has figured a way to accept both into his life.

One of the unique selling points for this piece is Zac Efron for he is a teenage girls heart throb drawing in a teenage audience yet the sophisticated storyline brings in a wider audience varying from young teenagers too young adults.
I particularly take interest in this trailer because I find that this is film which I would have like to been a part of because I like the emotional conflict involved as well as the way it has been presented, for it moves me and makes me feel as though I wish I could be there with the character to help and that is what I would like to achieve with my final piece.

Trailer Analysis: Age of Heroes

The First thing that you notice in the ‘Age of Heroes’ trailer, is you realise with this film is the music which comes in before everything else, a couple of seconds in and already you know it is going to be an action film including things such as guns and explosions having a male aspect to the general theme of the film, making its target audience edging towards males. It includes an image of the English and Nazi flag merged together telling us it is about the war against us and the Nazi’s, it also includes subtitles enforcing the impact of the war as well as giving it a sense of the army and its organisation and the harshness of what the troops will go through.
It is edited together to make a fast paced piece but gives more of an impact when there is a black screen pause in the action breaking the chaos of the war. It then brings us back in to the action with the subtitled flag backgrounds encouraging us to watch the film by including a subtitle which says ‘Discover the true story’, pushing us to watch the film. It then gets more focused on the team we, as an audience, should be siding with, and gets us more involved with what it involves and how it will unravel throughout the film. We also get to see the opposition and get to understand their role in the film and what their enemy look like and how good they are. It also includes a quick edited clip of a woman showing that it is also a film which women can relate to, bringing the small majority of a female audience as well.
The non-diegetic music plays a huge role throughout this trailer for it brings excitement, tension and it also has a heroic atmosphere to the piece, implying that these men will endure massive obstacles as well as pain and loss. The music builds and drops showing the soldiers heroism and bravery to put them through such a life changing experience, risking their lives to save others. The music drops out when there is a black screen enhancing more of an impact upon the audience.  There is a voice over of one of the commanders cutting in and out of diegetic and non-diegetic. This helps build on the heroic atmosphere making us aware that this is a piece linking to power and devotion.
The unique selling points involved in ‘Age of Heroes’ are the fact that it is set in the time where we had to put our own men up against the Nazi’s to help survive and conquer the war, and this is a subject which many can relate to, for it relates to our countries history and wanting us to engage with this interpretation of it.

Trailer Analysis: Real Steel

‘Real Steel’ is a film which belongs to the Action genre, skewing the target audience towards the males. It also will appeal more to a male audience because of the use of robotics as well as the violence. The reason why it may attract a female audience is because of Hugh Jackman playing the lead role, for he is considered as eye candy with his muscular body and dominating masculinity. This type of film will probably draw in an audience from teenagers to mid twenties, whereas it is unlikely that an audience of an older generation would go and see it because of the relation to the aspect of violent video games with the control over the iron robots.

This trailer draws in an audience because it has jumpy editing from one thing to another keeping you intrigued as to what is missing from that scene and it also has the tense music built on with the cheering and chanting of the crowd makes it seem as though it should be something you should be involved in and therefore making you want to watch the film. It is also a new film coming out on the 10th of November 2011, letting the audience know that the technology used to create this film is high tech drawing in a wider audience intriguing them as to whether the CGI is realistic or not.

They use non-diegetic music with a low base and hum to the piece, however there doesn’t seem to be a set piece of music for it sounds more as if it is steel and mechanics moving constantly. They also use a boxing ring side bell to represent the boxing feature of the film, telling the audience that it is a based around boxing.
Diegetic sound is also used for the crowd cheering and the dialogue used throughout. They use photographing sounds layering over a narrative by Hugh Jackman, and when jumping from certain shot to others there is a deep intense beat to engage the audience with what is happening.

This film has numerous unique selling points such as Hugh Jackman and the director Shaun Levy, who is popular for directing comedy films including: Big Fat Liar, Cheaper by the Dozen, The Pink Panther, Night at the Museum and Date Night. All of these films were considered successful and many people enjoyed them so now that Shaun Levy has directed something in a different direction to his usual stuff fans of his work will want to see ‘Real Steel’ to see if he is able to live up to expectations.

Trailer Analysis: The Notebook

‘The Notebook’ is considered a part of the drama, as well as the romantic, genre angling the target audience for this film towards females. However the inclusion of the army and a war helps draw in a male audience as well. The trailer reveals to us that it is a romantic drama film for two youngsters fall in love then go their separate ways and then lead different lives until once they’ve matured they come across each other and fall back in love ending with a happy ending but it includes serious effects of aging making you wonder if she’ll ever remember properly giving it the emotional factor.

This trailer is able to grip us from the beginning because of the technical aspects used throughout. The non-diegetic music makes us think that it is a peaceful and loving film and it builds as they build their relationship it then starts to calm and makes it seem more emotional involving more musical instruments and it has a crescendo when they rediscover their love and then it end with a slight fade out informing us that it is most likely a happy ending. What also builds on to the music building more of an atmosphere is the voiceover, which is of a soft deep soothing voice bring sensitivity to the piece, as well as informing the audience of what is happening. The dialogue included is something that reveals more of the storyline portraying a stereotypical romantic genre, boy meets girl they fall in love boy looses girl then gets her back at the end and they live happily ever after. However this is something that audiences like, they like to know what’s going on and the basics of what will happen it’s the way in which it happens which is the intriguing part.
I think the target audience for this would be from young teenage girls upwards, for the girls are able to relate to the emotional rollercoaster implicated in this trailer and film.

It includes slow transactions between shots and they flow into on another smoothly however they change often giving more sense as to what is in the film. It also implies the difference in lifestyles between the two main characters her being of upper middle-class and he being of working class, this is also shown in more depth in the film.
It incorporates the fact that the plot and storyline has been taken from a bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks, which is a unique selling point because people may of read his books for he also is famous for writing the book ‘Dear John’, bringing in more of a female audience.

Overall this trailer is one for the women, for it includes a romance, a loss and a gain bringing emotion to the whole piece. It also includes unique selling point such as the actors involved, ones who people are familiar with for instance: Ryan Gosling- A Woman’s dream, as well as James Marsden and for the men who watch the film they have Rachel McAdams.
This film is one that is moving and emotional making the audience feel as though they could have that life.

Diary

Today I have been thinking about what I would want to consider as my Genre and as of yet I am still not set on one but am leaning towards Drama or a Romantic.
As for other aspects of my film I have been considering a graveyard and church grounds, I also plan to explore other media techniques, using a boom and experimenting with different camera shots and angles.

Trailer Analysis: Senna

Senna is a Documentary, referring to the life of Ayrton Senna a Formula 1 Brazilian motor-racing champion who won the world championships three times before his tragic death at the age of 34. This Documentary has been achieved by reusing footage of the legend in action, at his time. Because this film is about the Formula Racing world it is a film which is skewed towards male audiences as well as for people who are from the age of 25+, for Ayrton Senna was around for his career in 1980-1994. The day of which Senna died was considered the ‘Blackest day of Formula 1 history’.

The way in which this trailer appeals to us and brings an audience in is by the real footage and the fact that millions of people would have experienced the misfortune in which Ayrton Senna was killed, therefore those who watch the Formula 1 and experienced his death in 1994 would be interested as to what his life was like and what kind of a person he was. It is also appealing to us as an audience because the director and producer didn’t bring in actors to replay the scene, they used what they had and made something which shows the world the real life experience of Ayrton Senna. This technique is successful because it means that the audience can’t complain about incorrect facts or criticize the actors, or any techniques used to re-enact the fatal incident. The accident would have been witnessed by thousands, devastating them all leaving them with the unbelievable thought that Ayrton Senna died in front of their eyes. Some of those people may wish to understand what actually happened and experience what he was like and who he actually was outside of Formula 1 racing.

The non-diegetic music used for this trailer chops and changes starting off with some moving and peaceful music with violins and a piano. It then jumps to a more beating music to emphasise the good moments and to represent the life of Ayrton Senna. It then keeps a beat but has darker music to intensify the atmosphere trying to get across the seriousness of the racing world and the way in which Senna thinks that he is invincible when driving is involved, not understanding that if one thing goes wrong his life could be in danger. The music turns to a more light hearted tone of music once again, bringing us to reality about his real life outside of Formula 1. It also includes a dramatic pause to emphasise that particular moment. Lastly the music changes back to the moving and peaceful music with the violins and piano to end the trailer, bringing you back to a state where all you’re thinking about is his death and it makes you feel upset and partly responsible.
While all this music is being played in the background there is sound footage of Ayrton Senna and team members talking about his life and morals he lived by. It also includes diegetic sound of when the F1 cars are zooming around the tracks as well as when the crowds are cheering and screaming for attention.
Varying the music is effective, bringing the audience up and down emotionally ending not with a low but a realisation of what happened.

This teaser trailer includes unique selling points such as the biography of Ayrton Senna and Documentary. Also the fact that this film and trailer would be appealing to a large audience for it was an experience, not only Senna and his team went through but thousands of others did as well. It’s about a legend, one that the world will never forget.

Trailer Analysis: Transformers

The film Transformers belongs to the Action genre which immediately skews the target audience, towards males. There are many other aspects included throughout the trailer which prompt us that this film’s audience is male dominated, this includes: the mystery and interest in alien life, robots, sci-fi, old kids programme, space, astronauts. There are some scripted lines involved such as “mission is a goer” which can relate to the mission 16-25 year olds might experience on a computer games. Seeing as the majority of men play some sort of violent computer game, most films which want to attract a male dominated audience have to include violence, guns, explosions and other senseless beatings to make them engrossed with what there watching.

The way this teaser trailer is able to grip us from the beginning is the historical reference to the moon landing in 1969 which everyone can relate to and have interest in, for many people wish to know what it’s like up in space and to know what actually happened when Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. landed on the moon. By playing with past facts, it plays on the expectations of the audience; making them intrigued and filling in a blank, for they don’t really know what happened on the 20th of July 1969. By using old footage from the original moon landing it attracts more of an older audience, because it was what they would have watched on their TV’s when they were younger; undergoing a once in a lifetime experience of the first moon landing and the mystery behind it being revealed drawing in the audience.

The non-diegetic music used for the teaser trailer varies from peaceful and intuitive to tense and breathe stopping. Once the government interfere with the live Apollo 11 feed the music starts to fade and brings suspense to it. Once the astronauts have permission to do what they were sent to do the music becomes alien to us using warping sounds and base mixed with high pitched screeches. This music builds the audience’s suspension and makes them gripped to the film, making them want to go and see the movie.
They also include non-diegetic narration used from the original moon landing playing over shots of space and old footage. It is used as a voiceover to give more of an impact on the audience and making them reminisce over that significant period in time. They also include the renowned phrase that Neil Armstrong said as he took his first steps onto the moon, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

This teaser trailer contains unique selling points to grab a wider audience, such as the moon landing on the 20th of July 1969. It is also a Steven Spielberg film and Michael Bay directed it and from knowing their past films and success, with Spielberg involved with films such as ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Indiana Jones’, and catch me if you can’ and Michael Bay with ‘Armageddon’, ‘’A nightmare on Elm Street’, and ‘Bad Boys’, people would want to go and see one which they have worked on together.
